A Note From The Playwright
Adapting a book to stage is, as I've found, a truly daunting prospect. Especially when that book is weaved by the mused hand of such an Olympian teller as Robert Louis Stevenson. Legs totter under the mantle, as you catch whiffs of Glenturret whiskey and a whisper of Scottish lilt over your shoulder with each clack of the keys. But then, Treasure Island... The very name beckons you out, out to the seas, beyond comfort, beyond safety, to search for a treasure buried deep within. I first had a copy of this glorious book placed in my hands when I was eight years old, by none other than our own Long-John Silver, my brother Marc. So perhaps my own adventure to Treasure Island is the fault of pirates after all! But once the quest is placed before you, you can't not try.
And treasure the journey yields, for the story is itself the treasure.
And that's the great secret: What makes Stevenson truly great, what makes Treasure Island truly great, is that, like the myths of old, you can find yourself in it at any point in life you come to it. Though set in a very particular place and time, it is ever new. Each character, each adventure within the adventure, is a place where you can put down anchor for a while, think, grow, and deepen. It's all there, buried for us to discover if we're but bold enough to look. The journey is perilous, riddled with hazard but also opportunity, as the adventure of any lifetime should be. So journey with our wonderful and talented cast, and let them transport you, through Stevenson's opus, to a chance at hidden gold. And may the wind be ever at your back!
About Looking Glass Theatre
Welcome to the first show of our first season at Looking Glass Theatre!
Looking Glass Theatre was co-founded by Marc A. Moir and Laura Kathleen Turner, two friends turned siblings-in-law who had previously been acting, directing, and producing alongside one another for the better part of 15 years.
After years of putting on church shows, fringe shows, university shows, and auditioning for other companies, our co-founders decided it was time to take the plunge: They didn't just want to try and make it as actors, they wanted to run their own professional company and make their own work. And not only that, they wanted to give opportunities to other aspiring actors as well.
But their aspirations didn't stop there. Marc and Laura quickly realized that if this dream was going to become a reality, it would need to include an actual theatre space. Not just for them, but for their community as well. A space dedicated to the arts, so the many, incredibly talented performers of Steinbach would have a comfortable, functional place to rent and perform in.
Today, we're 2 thirds there! We're making our own work, and proudly providing many opportunities to professional, aspiring actors in our community. And, once we are hitting an average of 200 tickets sold per performance for each show we produce, we will be making enough income to buy or build a theatre space in Steinbach. The plan is well underway!
Looking Glass Theatre operates as a "professional, non-union" theatre company, using the "actor-manager" model. We choose shows based on what we think our audiences will love the best, cast actors based on talent, and we are are not tied down by any kind of union rules regarding content or casting quotas. This arrangement comes with its own set of pros and cons, but when the pros are creative autonomy and being your own boss...the cons don't seem so bad.
We don't qualify for any kind of grants, and we don't have any sponsors (yet!) The show you're about to see has been made possible entirely because of the support of our community. Specifically, those who purchased Season Passes for 2024/25. If it weren't for our season pass holders, we'd be running this show on a bare stage, without mics or live music, in very plain costumes.
And our next show is being made possible by YOU! By buying a ticket to see "Treasure Island" you've helped us put money aside for the costumes and set pieces for our February show, "Mr. & Mrs. Nobody".
